Nicolock Helps with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition!
July 29, 2010

In June of 2010, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition came to Long Island to help a family in need, and Nicolock stepped up to lend a hand.  Nicolock pavers and wall products were donated to the very worthy family to construct their new home’s walkways, patio, and pool deck.

If you haven’t seen the show, each episode focuses on a family in need. These families have been through personal tragedy and have gone on to offer inspiration and hope to others. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition chooses a family, and then builds a new home for them in a matter of days.

This home in East Setauket, NY was completed in just 4 days, working around the clock. Building materials were donated, and local residents gave their time and talent to construct the home. You can imagine how each Extreme Makeover brings a community together. Nicolock Paving Stones and Retaining Walls is proud to have played a small part in this Long Island Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

This episode will air in Fall, 2010. Please check back for final details or visit abc.com for the scheduled program date.

The Emmy award winning reality program “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” now entering its 8th season, is produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding. It’s executive-produced by Brady Connell and George Verschoor. David Goldberg is Chairman, Endemol North America. The show airs Sundays from 8:00-9:00 p.m., ET on ABC.

Nicolock Pavers Pass the Test for Solar Reflectance

June 1, 2009

In crowded urban areas, all of the buildings and pavement can create unusually warm conditions because so many dark-colored roofs and pavements absorb solar radiation. Many of Nicolock's unit concrete pavers can provide reflective surfaces that reduce what is known as the urban heat island effect. Light colored pavers can reduce this heat island effect and as a result, save energy demands from air conditioning.

The U.S. Green Building Council's LEED™ program and others use Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) to estimate how hot a surface can get based on the surface’s light reflectance and emittance characteristics. The SRI is calculated using ASTM E1980 test procedure. Pavers with values greater than a SRI of 29 are the coolest and the most appropriate choice for reducing urban heat island effects.

The following popular Nicolock paver colors have been tested and shown to have a SRI value greater than 29: Chamois, Marble Blend, Mohave Tan, Pewter, Bayberry Blend, Harvest Gold Blend, and Crab Orchard Blend

There are several ways that Nicolock unit pavers can help a project obtain LEEDTM certification. One point can be achieved under SS7.1 Heat Island Effect: Non-Roof, for using pavers with a minimum SRI of 29 on 50% of the paved portions of the site. Other points related to stormwater management, recycling, and the use of regional materials are also available when using unit concrete products.
